SIP/SIMPLE is most likely to be the most popular. MS selected it and it re-uses of existing infrastructure (proxies etc.). There are standards and there are standards de facto. According to my memories, H.235v2 was approved in 2000 in parallel to H.323v4. Thus, H.323 shall only use the newer reference of course, and everything else should be considered an error, that has to be corrected. "Instant messaging" in general is a really crowded field of endeavour. The IETF had nine different protocol proposals in fromt of it. After a heroic effort these reduced to three. Now JABBER is attempting to expand the field again. The IETF has defined a framework for presence and instant messaging to make it easier for all of them to interwork. Paul, H.323 from the ITU web site has in its reference section: "... [22] ITU-T Recommendation H.235 (2000), Security and encryption for H-series (H.323 and other H.245-based) multimedia terminals. ..." Please make sure that you use the official version from the ITU (http://www.itu.int/rec/recommendation.asp?type=folders&lang=e&parent=T-REC- H.323) rather than the unofficial version off the PictureTel site or else.
