Paul, I forgot to say that I agree with your second paragraph with the proviso that it might take more than 4 seconds to send the Alerting. Paul, I don't understand why the intent was Alerting. "If an endpoint can respond to a Setup message with a Connect, Call Proceeding, or Release Complete within 4 seconds, it is not required to send the Alerting message." Why, if an endpoint can respond to a Setup with a Call Proceeding within 4 seconds, should it not have to send the Alerting? How will the user get a ringing sound in his ear then? I know that Alerting (and Connect) also stops T303. However, in Table 9-1/Q.931 (refernced by H.225 (7.5)), receipt of an Alerting starts T301, while receipt of Call Proceeding starts T310. I realise that T310 is not explicitly required by H.323 but the second para of (8.1.8.2) implies that the mechanism it represents IS required (I know its says should and not shall - perhaps this is a second error) "A Gateway should send a Call Proceeding message after it receives the Setup message (or after it receives ACF) if it expects more than 4 seconds to elapse before it can respond with Alerting, Connect, or Release Complete." The specific reason for sending Call Proceeding here is to stop T303 timing out and the call failing. The point is that for H.323 endpoints Call Proceeding is superfluous, if a terminal device cannot respond with an Alerting or Release Complete within 4 seconds it has problems [ or it's running windows (-; ] and the call probably should fail. However, gateways are different. If they interface to a large network then the Alerting must not be sent to the caller until an appropriate message has been received [ also in (8.1) "In the case of interworking through a Gateway, the Gateway ***shall send Alerting when*** it receives a ring indication from the SCN." ie WHEN it receives the ring indication and not before ] and this might take longer than 4 seconds - hence the need for gateways to send Call Proceeding and the relevance of 4 seconds in the sentence in question. My original assertion that the text in (8.1) is incorrect stands. "If an endpoint can respond to a Setup message with a Connect, Alerting, or Release Complete within 4 seconds, it is not required to send the Call Proceeding message." Alternatively, if an endpoint *cannot* respond to a Setup message with a Connect, Alerting, or Release Complete within 4 seconds, it *should* (shall?) send a Call Proceeding message. The only other interpretation I can come up with is that the intent was "If an endpoint can respond to a Setup message with a Connect within 4 seconds, it is not required to send the Alerting message." If it responds with a Release Complete within 4 seconds it's not going to send an Alerting! I've just seen Chris's reply as well - I think my observations still stand. Experts, Could someone clarify following aspects of H.235 V2 Annex D (Baseline Security Profile). 1) Section D.2, last but second paragraph (This profile defines to....). According to this paragraph, the generalId field shall be set to the "called endpoint ID" for H225 signalling messages. Since the calls must be GK routed, shouldn't the generalId refer to the gkId for 225 messages sent by endpoints? Even if it is the called epId, how the peer endpoint can ever know the called epId, since it does not appear ARQ/ACF messages? Section D.10 throws some insight into the usage of senderId and generalId, but it does it so only for RAS messages. 2) Section D.9.1 of H.235 V2 states the 225 UUIEs which shall contain cryptoTokens field. H.323 V4 has added new UUIEs (Status, Status Enquiry,...). Hi My understanding of preGrantedARQ call leg is that unsolicited IRR is the ONLY RAS message that may be sent on such call leg. To be honest this understanding based more on memory and intuition than on something written in the standard. The only written thing that I was able to find and that somehow "clarifies" the issue is the following paragraph from H.225.0 (explanation of irrFrequencyInCall subfield of preGrantedARQ field in RCF: ------------------------------------- irrFrequencyInCall - This indicates the frequency, in seconds, of IRR messages sent to the gatekeeper when the endpoint is in one or more calls. If it is not present, the gatekeeper does not want unsolicited IRR messages. When the endpoint is sending these IRR messages, the call reference value shall be made unique for the terminal, as it would have been generated in an Admission Request. However, this is not a "normal" CRV, and cannot be reused for further communication (DRQ, IRQ or BRQ). Chip! H.323v4 defines a placeholder for future parameters. The parameters together with the related procedures will be defined in H.323 Annex O. We are going to work on Annex O during 2001. We have decided to include the basic H.323 URL definition within H.323v4 since it is an important feature (especially with ENUM) and can be used as such even in its basic form. Manoj, the call-ID is the real means to tie together all messages related to the same call. Regarding your specific questions: For a GK routed call, the GK "knows" about the call even in the case of pre-granted admission, and can of course send BRQ/IRQ. The CRV used for these RAS messages can be the same as in SETUP. For a directly routed call with pre-granted admission, the GK is not immediately aware of the call (periodic IRQs for all calls is one way to obtain this knowledge eventually). However, the endpoint can always send RAS messages, e.g. BRQ or IRR. For these RAS messages it will use an arbitrary locally unique CRV and, more important, the same globally unique call-ID. Hi All, I have a couple of question related to the use of RAS CRV. Consider an endpoint EP1 has pre-granted admission and sends SETUP with 225CRV1 to GK. If GK subsequently sends a BRQ/IRQ for this call, what RASCRV is uses in these messages. Would RASCRV be same as 225CRV1 ? Secondly, is it expected that GK can potentially send BRQ/IRQ for a call for which it gave pre-granted admission to an endpoint? In multicast, the multicast addresses are assigned by the MC and distributed to the endpoints in the communicationModeCommand. It is the responsibility of the MC to allocate and assign unique multicast addresses. The endpoint shall signal an openLogicalChannel to the MC with the assigned multicast address. The MC shall forward the openLogicalChannel to each receiving endpoint. In cases where media from multiple endpoints are transmitted on a single session (e.g. single multicast address), the MC shall open a logical channel to each endpoint receiving media from an endpoint in the conference. ---------------- "Forwarding of OLC" is a little ambiguous. 1. use the same LCN ? 2. what about OLC ack? for example, when there is a conference composed of a MCU and Terminal A, B, and C, only Terminal A speaks and B, C listens to A. then, MCU will broadcast communicationModeCommand that contains only one entry without specifying destination and specifying the multicast address of Terminal A. then, Terminal A will send OLC to MCU. From this point on, I am not sure. Possible interpretations are.. 1. MC will forward the OLC to Terminal B and C. And The Terminal B and C will send OLC Ack To MC. At the time of receving OLC Ack, what should MC do? forward the 2 OLC Ack pdus to Terminal A ? It seems not proper.. 2. Hi, Terminal label structure was carried from H.320 to identify a specific terminal for chair control and similar functions. In communication mode command for a broadcast conference you may not need to identify specific terminal. The default applies to all non specified terminals. Syntax method of GEF extension definition

Hi All, As you may know, the most recent version of H.GEF.1 included a syntax based method of defining GEF extensions. I defined this so that people wouldn't get confused with trying to interpret a syntax based definition as pure ASN.1. My principle is, if you are defining something that is different to something that is already used, then make it obviously different. I'm fairly comfortable that the syntax is complete. Also, if people don't want to use that method of GEF definition they are not obliged to. I personally would therefore like to keep it in. However, we live in a democracy. Therefore, the person that gives me the highest bid can decide whether it stays or goes! Meanwhile, people can vote on whether it stays or goes by e-mailing me directly. I will then summarise and post the results to the list. In the event of a draw I'll keep it in. Draft summary of 6th MoIP reliable transport conference call

The sixth in a series of conference calls to discuss a reliable transport protocol to be used with MoIP was held on Friday, July 6, 2001. As agreed at the Porto Seguro, BR, meeting of ITU-T SG16, the goal of these conference calls is to develop a joint contribution to the next meeting of TR-30.1 giving requirements for the MoIP reliable transport mechanism, and possibly an evaluation of existing protocols against those requirements. Once the requirements and possible evaluations have been presented to TIA TR-30.1 and agreed to by them, the requirements and possible evaluations are, if possible, to be presented to the IETF 51 meeting in London, UK, during the week of 8/5/2001. Some parties may present a draft protocol proposal to that meeting. On the call from The CommWorks Corp. were: - Jim Renkel. >From Cisco Systems were: - Herb Wildfeuer; and - Mehryar Garakani. >From VOCAL Technologies, Ltd., was: - Alberto Torres. The call began by acceptinging the draft summary of the fifth conference call. Then, the schedule for the remaining conference calls was reviewed: - Tuesday, July 10, 2001, 10:30 A.M., CDT - Friday, July 13, 2001, 10:30 A.M., CDT The dial-in bridge number remains +1.847.262.0999, conference ID # 06647 ("0MOIP" on a touch-tone keypad.). Because the TR-30.1 meeting is the week of July 16, 2001, these will be the last conference calls before that meeting. Next, attention was called to IETF RFC 2914, "Congestion Control Principles". Conference call participants are to read and study this RFC. It will be discussed in next Tuesday's conference call. Then it was agreed that Jim will get a TR-30.1 document number from Les Brown in preparation for making the joint submission to the upcoming TR-30.1 meeting. The remainder of the conference call was spent reviewing the first draft of the joint contribution, particularly the protocol evaluation tables in section 3. Many small changes were suggested and will be incorporated in the next draft for next Tuesday's conference call. Major changes, to also be made in the next draft, include: - a requirement for "flushable"; Herb will draft language defining this; - requirements for "graceful co-existence with RTP" and "graceful co- existence with UDP/TL"; Herb will also draft language defining this; - a requirement for "bandwidth efficiency"; Mehryar will draft language for this. Draft language for the above four requirements is to be gotten to Jim ASAP for inclusion (hopefully)in the next draft. It was agreed that conference call participants should especially study the language in Section 1 of the current draft. It will be reviewed at next Tuesday's conference call.

Finally, Mehryar Garakani's draft language for packet-based, sequenced, expedited delivery, and low latency requirements was discussed and modified. Additional requirements for robustness in the face of congestion control and transmit rate limiting, and for being light weight were discussed. Jim will include the language in the first draft of the joint contribution for the next conference call.

Draft summary of 4th MoIP reliable transport conference call

The fourth in a series of conference calls to discuss a reliable transport protocol to be used with MoIP was held on Friday, June 22, 2001. As agreed at the Porto Seguro, BR, meeting of ITU-T SG16, the goal of these conference calls is to develop a joint contribution to the next meeting of TR-30.1 giving requirements for the MoIP reliable transport mechanism, and possibly an evaluation of existing protocols against those requirements. Once the requirements and possible evaluations have been presented to TIA TR-30.1 and agreed to by them, the requirements and possible evaluations are, if possible, to bepresented to the IETF 51 meeting in London, UK, during the week of 8/5/2001. Some parties may present a draft protocol proposal to that meeting. On the call from The CommWorks Corp. were: - Fred Lucas; and - Jim Renkel. >From Cisco Systems were: - Herb Wildfeuer; and - Mehryar Garakani. >From Brooktrout was: - Dave Duehren. The call began by discussing the proposed summary of the third conference call. Cisco asked that the "background paragraph" from the first conference call summary be added to this and all future conference call summaries. With that addition, the meeting summary was agreed to and approved. After making that addition, Jim will send the meeting summary to relevant e-mail reflectors. Next, it was agreed that draft conference call summarries would be sent immediately to the e-mail reflectors, then reviewed, ammended if necessary, and approved at the next conference call. That procedure is to start with the summary of this conference call [which is this e-mail.]. Then, the next two conference calls were scheduled, as follows: - Friday, 06/29/2001, 10:30 A.M., CDT - Friday, 07/06/2001, 10:30 A.M., CDT The dial-in arrangements for the conference calls would be the same as for this conference call: access number +1.847.262.0999; conference ID "06647" (That's "0MOIP" (zero-em-oh-eye-pea) on your touch-tome keypad.). [If you plan to participate in these conference calls, please inform Jim Renkel ASAP at James_Renkel(a)3Com.com so that sufficient conference bridge ports can be arranged.] Next, the CommWorks proposed language for media stream / protocol stack switching was discussed. It was agreed that, while interesting in general and perhaps impacting the reliable transport protocol, this really is material for annexes to V.moip and relevant signaling channel protocol specifications. Then, the meeting returned to Table 1 of CommWork's PCM01-020 contribution to the Nice, FR, rapporteur's meeting. It was agreed that the forward error correction characteristic should, at most, be an optional capability of the reliable transport protocol and that its use must be negotiated on a session-by-session basis. It was then agreed that forward error correction was but a means, perhaps with other characteristics or requirements, to the end of low latency. It was agreed that low latency, however achieved, was a desirable characteristic of the reliable transport mechanism. Mehryar will draft requirement language to this effect. In this vein, it was then agreed, in considering requirements for a reliable transport protocol, to concentrate first on "high-level" requirements or basic capabilities, such as low latency, and then on "low-level" requirements or enhancements, such as forward error correction. When that consideration is complete, all requirements would be prioritized in some way TBD. It was agreed that forward error correction and error correction by continuous transmission should be relegated to the low-level or enhancements category. Agreement could NOT be reached on whether error correction by retransmission should also be relegated, or be placed in the high-level or basic capabilities category. How "mandatory" is the presence of G.711 in the Terminal Capability set

6.2.5/H.323 states that all terminals must be _capable_ to encode and decode G.711 A-law and u-law. 6.2.5.3 states that an endpoint need not indicate this support if it knows that it will be communicating on a low bit-rate segment. This seems somewhat contradictory. However, the fact that G.711 must be supported does not really mean that support should also be indicated in the capability set. This would be in line with the statement in 6.2.5.3. The question therefore remains, must G.711 support always be indicated in the capability set if the endpoint has no knowledge about the properties of the network that it will be communicating on? Megaco/H.248

Hello List, Megaco and H.248 are two different protocols ? or they are same ? I am assuming they are same, If they are different please advice.
