Dear SG16 experts. Last week we had a successful meeting Questions F,G,2-5/16 in Beijing. The reports of the meeting are contained in the following TDs: http://avguest@ftp3.itu.int/av-arch/avc-site/0405_Bei/ General -- TD-32c + LS(TD-50a, TD-51a) Q.F/16 --- TD-09a Q.G/16 --- TD-10b + LS(TD-49a) Q.2/16 --- TD-11a + LS(TD-38a, TD-48a) Q.3/16 --- TD-12a + LS(TD-39, TD-40a) Q.4/16 --- TD-13a + LS(TD-35) Q.5/16 --- TD-14c The document list is found at: http://avguest@ftp3.itu.int/av-arch/avc-site/0405_Bei/0504_Bei.html We reviewed 90 AVD-numbered documents including 15 incoming liaisons and 51 TDs. The list of participants will be advised as soon as it has been received from the host. There were 20 delegates from organizations outside China and more than 20 local participants. Please note that TD-32c does not mention TD-50a (LS to JRG-NGN), but it was agreed to send this liaison at the closing session. Hi Everyone, I thought this would be an opportunity to say our 2 cents and comment on this. --NIST Releases Draft Guidelines for VoIP Security (6 May 2004) The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has released draft guidelines for securing Voice Over IP technology. The suggestions include putting voice and data traffic on logically different networks and denying access to the voice gateway from the data network. NIST is accepting comments on the draft through June 18. http://www.gcn.com/cgi-bin/udt/im.display.printable?client.id=gcndaily2&sto… http://csrc.nist.gov/publications/drafts/NIST_SP800-58-040502.pdf Thank you Nadim El-Khoury

Additional documents for the meeting
by Paul E. Jones 06 May '04

06 May '04

Beijing Meeting Attendees, I have uploaded additional documents that were sent to me, including three new liaison statements. I made the liaison statements available as AVD documents. So, the highest numbered AVD document is not 2502. I will make any additional documents available as I receive them, though I will be traveling over the weekend. As such, some documents may not get posted until Sunday when I arrive in Beijing. I look forward to seeing everybody in Beijing! Paul

Documents for the SG16 Meeting
by Paul E. Jones 05 May '04

05 May '04

Beijing Meeting Attendees, I have uploaded all of the documents that I received by the document deadline today. They now appear on the AVC site here: http://ftp3.itu.ch/av-arch/avc-site/0405_Bei/ Mr Boyle attempted to upload AVD-2490, but that attempt failed-- the file size was zero octets. Unless there is disagreement, I will not mark the document late. It is really not an issue, as that particular document is an editor's draft and certainly something we would want to review in the meeting. There are a few documents missing and I've been informed by most that the documents are forthcoming, but they're just delayed. I hope to have the balance of the papers posted in less than 24 hours. Best Regards, Paul

RE: Comments on AVD-2464 (H.245 OLC Master/Slave conflicts)
by Tsahi Levent-Levi 05 May '04

05 May '04

Hi, The reasons stated below are not the actual reasons. The main reason is the fact that the standard doesn't state anything about conflicts that arise because of uni/bi-direction-ness of channels. Since H.324 can open video channels as bi-directional or uni-directional, such conflicts are quite common. In the Geneva meeting, it was suggested to add a new chapter into the standard about this and a new appendix with the illustrations. Re AVD-2464, (on H.245 OLC Master/Slave conflicts), the proposed material appears to be redundant with the existing text in C.4.1.3/H.245 and C.5.1.3/H.245. Perhaps I misunderstand. If I remember correctly, this issue was discussed in Geneva, and one of the reasons given for adding this text was that some implementations do not follow the procedures of C.4.1.3 and C.5.1.3 correctly (that is, they don't handle Master/Slave OLC conflicts per those clauses, which can break interworking). If that is the main motivation, I suggest that it would be better to point out the existing text of C.4.1.3 / C.5.1.3 of H.245 to the implementors so they can correct the bug, than to add redundant text, which may make it more difficult to read and understand H.245. This could have the unintended effect of making mistakes in understanding H.245 more likely (by adding complexity to the document), rather than less. Dear Q.F,G,2-5/16 experts, There have been expressed some concerns about SARS in Beijing. After having reviewed WHO's information and available news by obtaining TSB's help, I think that SARS is kept controlled. We will hold the Beijing meeting of Q.F,G,2-5/16 as scheduled. Q.B/16 will have its meeting there concurrently. I have had a difficulty to get the updated list of participants from the meeting host. Could you take a look at the table after my signature (as of 26 April) and return a short note to <sokubo(a)waseda.jp> if you are coming to Beijing or not? Error in H.245v9
by Paul E. Jones 25 Apr '04

25 Apr '04

Folks, It has been a while since a "serious" error has been identified in an H.323-related spec, but one was just recently discovered in H.245v9. I want to poll the people on the H.323 Implementers List and the SG16 mailing list to see what kind of impact we might have if we change this definition. The problem relates to the "FECData" CHOICE: http://www.packetizer.com/iptel/h245/h245_asn.html#MULTIMEDIA-SYSTEM-CONTRO… It is roughly defined like this: FECData ::= CHOICE { rfc2733 { ... stuff ... } } The problem is that there is no extension marker at the end of the "rfc2793" SEQUENCE, though it was intended that one be inserted. If you look at every other related definition (FECCapability and FECMode), you will see that they do contain an extension marker. We essentially have these ways to resolve this issue: 1.. Change the FECData definition to contain an extension marker 2.. Rename the "FECData" structure and references to something like "FECDataDeprecated" and add a new field called "FECData" and a new structure to go with it. This would mean no other text would have to change in H.323 or H.245 and no implementations would be impacted significantly: applications would be binary compatible, though two system implementing FEC might not open FEC protected channels correctly (one side thinking FEC is used and the other side not, for example). 3.. Create all new data structures and deprecate all current FEC data structures related to the "FECData" CHOICE We've had these kinds of problems in the past and simply corrected them via the H.323-Series Implementers Guide. However, it is always good to understand who, if anybody, will be impacted by such changes. Can you please provide me with information so that we can make an informed decision? Thanks, Paul E. Jones Rapporteur, ITU-T Q2/16 // www.packetizer.com

Cancellation of Q.K /16 meeting
by Leo.Lehmann＠bakom.admin.ch 20 Apr '04

20 Apr '04

Dear experts, Last week on April 13 was the deadline which I set for the reception of contributions regarding Q.K (mobility) for the rapporteur meeting in Beijing. Even if I was waiting one week longer I have not received any contribution so far. To justify a meeting, we need according the ITU-T rules a significant number of contributions and member organizations which want to attend. Due to the lack of contributions I regretfully have to announce that there will be NO meeting of Q.K/16 in May in Beijing. We have a tentative plan to hold a meeting in September (co-located with Q.D,F,G,1-5) if there is enough interest and a sufficient number of contributions. In the interim, I encourage everyone to progress our work by e-mail correspondence. Best regards, Leo Lehmann Rapporteur for Q.K/16
