WP1/16 Experts, I updated the meeting directory with the current list of registered documents and, for those already submitted, inserted hyperlinks to those documents. I will update this page several times before the meeting and again at the close of the registration period. At this point, there are documents submitted and/or I have been notified of intended submissions for all Questions, except Q21/16. In order to seek final approval for Q21 to meet, we really need to have documents registered by the end of next week. If you intend to submit a document to any Questions, I strongly advise you to register your document as soon as possible, even if the title is subject to change. I'll adjust the document titles in the document list as documents are posted, so there's no problem if titles change slightly. Upcoming Rapporteur meeting

WP1/16 Experts, As a reminder, we need to have a reasonable count of planned contributions for the upcoming Rapporteur meeting. Without a sufficient number, we'll have to cancel the meeting. At the moment, Q3/16 has plenty of contributions, but the other Questions do not. If you plan to submit a contribution to the meeting, please submit your request by following the links on this page: http://www.packetizer.com/standards/itu-sg16/wp1/ Alternatively, you can send me an email with the Title, source, and so forth and I'll register it for you. Strictly speaking for Q2/16, if there is a preference for holding a series of electronic meetings instead of the face-to-face meeting, we can do that. If that would be your preference, let me know. As in the past, Q1 is planning to hold a meeting together with those Questions. One of the main objectives is to progress video related and motorized conferencing matters. In order to start the planning process for this meeting, I would like to have an idea of the number of contributions for this meeting and who is planning to travel to Geneva for the Q1/16 sessions. Update on the work related to H.325 / AMS

Folks, I have been asked by a number of people for an update on the Advanced Multimedia System (AMS) / H.325. The mailing lists have been pretty quiet, but work is steadily progressing. I was also asked to refresh the AMS project page at the ITU. I produced a draft, but it still needs some work, as we're trying to present it simply and concisely; I have a tendency for verbosity. However, an update was definitely in order since it has been several years, in fact, since I updated my "overview" slides. Since that time, there has been a lot of progress in terms of defining the message flows, the relationship between entities, and the signaling syntax of the new system. Preliminary Notice of Joint Rapporteur Meeting in Geneva (10-14 March 2014)

Dear WP1/16 Experts, I am sending this email as preliminary notice of our intent, as discussed during this most recent SG16 meeting, to hold a Rapporteur Group meeting 10 - 14 March 2014 in Geneva. The complete text of the meeting invitation can be found on the AVC site here: http://ftp3.itu.int/av-arch/avc-site/2013-2016/1403_Gen/Notice_1403_Gen.pdf As was mentioned during the SG16 meeting, hotel space during that week may be limited due to other events. However, booking early you should be able to find accommodations. We prepared the invitation a little early both to ensure that people have ample time to find accommodations and, due to the holidays approaching over the next few weeks in both the east and west, to ensure people have time to get a visa (if required). Note that, while the document registration deadline in the invitation is rather generous, we really need to have a fairly accurate count of registrations by early February so that we will know that we have sufficient contributions to go forward with the meeting. Recent progress in H.323 and H.325

Folks, For the benefit of those who have not attended SG16 meetings recently, I want to share some of the more exciting work the group is doing in the area of IP-based multimedia communications (IPMC). Specifically, this message is focused on H.323 and H.325 (AMS) work. The work on H.325 has been moving forward slowly, partly due to changes in peoples' priorities due to the global economic crisis, but also do to challenges with finding the right path forward. The vision for what H.325 will enable has not substantially changed, but we had to find a way to realize that vision in a way that can actually be easily implemented. In recent meetings, I think that's starting to become clearer with new concepts being introduced in H.323 called "Assets". An Asset is a an application that implements a subset of the H.225.0 and H.245 protocols to provide a very specific function (or set of functions), such as an electronic whiteboard, file transfer, or application sharing. Each application type will be defined in its own Asset application specification. At a high level, the user's terminal and an Asset associate with each other using call-independent supplementary service messages, which are a type of message already defined and supported in H.323. In this way, we do not introduce new message types and messages will work over the existing H.323 infrastructure. Once devices are associated, they can be queried, invoked, and terminated using similar message constructs. Assets themselves register with the Gatekeeper as a "Simple Endpoint Type" (SET). Presently, H.323 defines two SET device types, so Assets will be a third type of SET. During the IMTC meeting that will be held in Portugal next month (http://imtc.org/forum2013/agenda.html) Spranto (http://www.spranto.com) will be there providing a live demonstration of the H.323 Asset concept. Not only that, but it will be a demonstration working through NAT/FW devices. This should be really interesting since, in my opinion, this represents the next-step in multimedia communications by bringing together a plurality of devices and applications to provide for a richer user experience. In parallel, we are now modeling the same approach in H.325. We're defining the H.325 signaling messages, working to ensure that we keep the number of message primitives to a minimum and to reduce the complexity of every entity. We also decided to switch to using JSON for signaling in H.325, which should be very interesting to developers. It should make it easier to build a web-based H.325 application, but it is also much easier to explain the protocol, extend it, etc. JSON has proven to be a very flexible and simple syntax. If you are interested in getting involved either the H.323 Asset work or the H.325 work, feel free to reach out to me. I've have been neglectful of the H.325 design mailing list for a while now, I know, due to my other priorities preempting a lot of my direct involvement. However, I would very much like to re-start the interim electronic meetings on H.325 if there is interest. We can do that following the upcoming SG16 meeting (28 October - 8 November). Just let me know and I'll make plans accordingly. In the meantime, I would definitely encourage you to try to make it to the IMTC meeting to see some of this new stuff in action. Cheers! Paul E.
