Hi! I'm happy to announce the release of GNU Gatekeeper version 3.1. NOTE: This release contains a SECURITY FIX and users of all previous versions are encouraged to update to 3.1. openmcu and h323plus - getting video operational

hi, i'm in the process of getting openmcu up and running. the usual issues which have been discussed many many times - audio working but video is not - are being experienced. i've managed to get to the point where, after downloading the source code for ffmpeg, ptlib, h323plus, openmcu and various other plugins that i've found on openmcu.ru, and after making various modifications i can get a stable build... *without* video. the moment i add in the plugins which handle video, a connection from ekiga hangs openmcu indefinitely, to the extent where even the web interface on port 1420 doesn't work. so, things that *might* be stopping this from working: i haven't been able to build any of the h323plus plugins, except just now, and i had to modify the "configure" script as well as the source code, because the detection of h263p_encoder has now been modified: it's called ff_h263p_encoder, as is h264_encoder, decoder and mpeg_decoder - they all now have the prefix "ff_" as you can see from these patches (which i found via very very obscure google searches) http://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/current/pkgsrc/devel/opal/patches/ but... this still isn't enough, because the actual detection in configure.ac is utterly broken. so, instead what i did - temporarily - was to hack the configure script to define HAVE_H263P=yes, HAVE_H264_DETECTION=yes, HAVE_H263=yes on a permanent basis. that then allowed me to actually have the plugins configured, *but* they're not actually compiled! so i had to "cd plugins" and run "make", that then discovered that there's an error in include/openh323buildopts.h - i had to edit this file to hard-code the location of ptlib's revision.h file (#include "/root/ptlib-2.10.4~dfsg/revision.h"), and hooray, the make worked. i say worked, but it still didn't compile things: the detection for LIBAVCODEC changes is wrong - features that said to be in version 54 are actually present in version 52, so i had to make changes like this: #if LIBAVCODEC_VERSION_MAJOR < 52 _context->codec_type = CODEC_TYPE_VIDEO; #else _context->codec_type = AVMEDIA_TYPE_VIDEO; #endif _context->codec_id = CODEC_ID_H264; then there was also a #include that was commented out in rfc2190.cxx #include <malloc.h> which had to go back in, because the "free" function is undefined otherwise. so fiiinally, that allowed h261-vic_video_pwplugin.so and a whole bunch of other codecs to be built (hooray!) and, so, having compiled all these plugins, i now install them aaaaaand.... openmcu hangs when h261-vic_video_pwplugin.so is installed. all other plugins are installed (h264 etc.) but making a call with ekiga using these plugins, they're not activated. so... after struggling to get even the plugins compiled (several hours of investigation), and struggling to get the source code compiled (2 days), things are no further along. does anyone have a successful recipe and build environment and/or has anyone actually ever got openmcu to ever work with video, or does anyone have any advice on how to go about investigating and/or fixing the issue of hanging with h261-vic-video-pwplugin? many thanks, l.

Dear Simon, I tried to check if h323plus endpoint works with demanded jitter value or not. From the linux server side that has OpenMCU started I executed: # tc qdisc add dev eth0 root netem delay 74ms 2ms (74ms is average delay, 2ms is jitter) And the video receiving on the client side (Myphone) became distorted. Then I tried to decrease jitter value from 2 to 1ms with: # tc qdisc delete dev eth0 root netem delay 74ms 2ms # tc qdisc add dev eth0 root netem delay 74ms 1ms (74ms avg delay, 1ms jitter) And the video come back to normal. So 1ms jitter looks OK, 2ms - not OK: 6-level tracing shows time to time: 2012/08/09 14:34:49.034 3 rtp.cxx(1122) RTP Dropped 1 packet(s) at 19195, ssrc=532876226 2012/08/09 14:34:49.034 6 h323pluginmgr.cxx(2105) PLUGIN Partial Frame received H.264-4CIF2 Ignoring rendering. 2012/08/09 14:34:49.034 3 rtp.cxx(1103) RTP Out of order packet, received 19194 expected 19196 ssrc=532876226 h323plus version I use has been forked, it is from Myphone3 project, so I don't mean you should fix something in the original h323plus... But de-jittering used for receiving audio only in both branches of project, that's why I need to ask you do you see any other way to resolve this except to get jitter buffer work with the video RTP also? I tried to increase jitter buffer stack, fix 40ms/frame constant and force it to work with video, but my endpoint just hangs when attempting to draw incoming video frame at the moment. And I need an advice, is this way "right" or not? And what's the reason of creating additional buffers for outputdevice if the out-of- order packets just drops? Simon Horne s.horne at packetizer.com Tue Feb 8 08:29:07 EST 2011 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Igor The main issue is not the packets are being lost but the rendering being too slow and blocking the receive thread which would drop packets. The quick solution was to throw the actual rending within your VideoOutputDevice onto another thread and use a std::queue (with mutex) to load the frames coming out of the codec and grab the frames to send to the renderer. This will then not block the receiving thread. You can be cleaver and build a 1-3 frame buffer in your outputdevice to simulate a jitter buffer. See MyVideoOutputDevice::SetFrameData(..,const void * mark); The mark is a H323_RTPInformation pointer which contains a pointer to the last raw received RTP packet of the completed frame. You can get timestamp information from this and pace the output to the render, so if a frame is dropped then you can conceal it. If I switch off decoding of incoming video packets, than number of lost packets decreases. That is why I would like to try use jitter on video stream. I changed call of OpalMediaFormat() constructor inside OpalVideoFormat constructor in such way that needsjitter member become TRUE. But It is not working, not decoding any data. How can I use Jitter for my purpose and in general - can I do it? Igor Pavlov
