The meaning of "mode" in the H.323 Recommendation?

Mode is defined in H.245 as:

Mode: A mode is a set of elementary streams that a terminal is transmitting,
intends to transmit, or would like to receive.

and elementary stream is defined as:

Elementary Stream: Elementary Stream is a generic term for a coded video,
coded audio or other coded bitstream.
